12chopped nuts (optional, such as pecans or walnuts)
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13 inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper.
In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.
Beat in the eggs, one at a time, and then add the vanilla extract, mixing until well combined.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring until fully incorporated.
Fold in the chocolate chips and caramel bits (and nuts if using) until evenly distributed throughout the dough.
Spread half of the cookie dough into the bottom of the prepared baking pan, pressing it down to form an even layer.
Bake the bottom layer for about 10 minutes, until it is just starting to set but not browned.
Remove from the oven and sprinkle the remaining cookie dough over the layer. It’s okay if bits of the bottom layer show through; it will spread while baking.
Bake the bars for an additional 20-25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Allow the bars to cool in the pan for at least 30 minutes before cutting into squares.
Notes
Dust with a light sprinkle of sea salt for contrast, and serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top for a delightful dessert experience.
